A Christmas Present from The Epoch Times

Jay Himmelberg, an expert on China writing in The Epoch Times, delivered an early Christmas gift. Here's the link. www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/26065/
If you read only one thing this week, please make it this long but very informative article about myths and truth concerning China. It's a great piece of work! Himmelberg concludes with actions everyone can take to put the pressure on China. You may have read similar suggestions here on this website, but Himmelberg has his own ideas and they're worth checking out, too. He, for instance, no longer shops at WalMart.

China sure rubbed Obama's nose in the carpet at Copenhagen. I'm wondering when this White House will wake up and realize China is no friend of the United States.

I'm also hoping that in the New Year environmentalists will wake up to the fact that China sabotaged Copenhagen, and that the environmental movement's hopes for a climate change treaty are trashed -- at least, until there is regime change in China.

If we could unite Americans pissed off at losing jobs to China with environmentalist groups pissed off by Copenhagen with human rights groups pissed off by China's brutal repression, maybe we could get somewhere.

Check out Himmelberg's article.

A Great Idea for Obama -- How to Create Jobs Without Adding a Penny to the Deficit

A great suggestion for President Obama appeared in the Financial Times on Dec. 8, 2009. An op-ed by University of Chicago (Obama's home-town!) Economics and Finance Professor Robert Aliber argues the case for trade tariffs against China. Aliber says the U.S. is justified, because of China's currency manipulation, in placing a 10% tariff against Chinese imports. The tariff goes up 1% every six months, until China's trade surplus with the U.S. drops to $5 billion a month.

"Americans have been patient -- too patient -- in accepting the loss of several million US manufacturing jobs because of China's determined pursuit of mindless mercantilist policies..." Aliber says.

He also writes: "Such an initiative by the Obama Administration would be much more significant as a jobs-creation measure than anything else it could adopt."

Is anyone in the Democratic Party listening? The best way for the Democrats to assure their political survival in next year's mid-term elections is to create jobs. The same holds true for Obama's reelection chances.

Tariffs on China will do the trick. Anyone in the White House listening?
